100
The 100 km of Biel has been run since 1959 and is rightly called the 'night of nights': it starts in June at 10 pm outside the Tissot Arena, and runners cover most of the distance in the dark by headlamp. The course passes through some twenty municipalities in two cantons, past the lake, through Seeland villages, along the Aare on the famous 'Ho Chi Minh trail' and over the Emmental hills, before dawn and the finish back in Biel. The Bieler Lauftage also offer shorter options such as the marathon, half marathon and relays, drawing about 4,000 participants in all, and since 2008 the race has hosted the Swiss ultramarathon championships. Biel/Bienne is the country's truly bilingual town and a watchmaking capital, with a charming old town, Lake Biel and vineyards on the slopes of the Jura.
