Åland Marathon takes place in late October in central Mariehamn; the 2026 race is the ninth held here, and the last edition drew 333 runners. Choose from the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km. The course is a flat loop of about 4.7 km along the town's footpaths, part asphalt and part gravel, with views of the sea and islands. The evening before, a free Zombie Run along the pedestrian street ends with a ghost disco, a nod to Halloween. Åland is Finland's Swedish-speaking autonomous archipelago: visit the Maritime Museum and the barque Pommern, explore the skerries by bike and try Åland pancakes.
