The Alaušas Marathon is held on 23 June, the eve of Joninės, Lithuania's Midsummer festival; the 2026 race was its sixth edition and drew several hundred runners. The start is at 19:00 in the village of Sudeikiai, and runners head into the bright June night along the shores of Lake Alaušas, one of Lithuania's largest lakes at over a thousand hectares. Distances range from 1 km up to 42.195 km, plus Nordic walking. Legend says Prince Alaušas's ashes were scattered over the lake and that his castle stood on the nearby Maneičiai hillfort, so this evening run comes steeped in folklore. The countryside around Utena is Aukštaitija, land of lakes, pine forests and a national park — and after the finish it's time for the Joninės bonfires.
