The Aletsch Halbmarathon takes place on the last weekend of June in Bettmeralp and attracts up to 2,700 runners from Switzerland and abroad. It is a mountain half marathon inside the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, on trails above the Great Aletsch Glacier with tough climbs and views of the Valais 4,000-metre peaks, which is why the organisers boldly call it the most beautiful mountain race in Europe. Saturday is a family day with the Glacier Run, Aletsch Mini Run and a sprint, and the main race is on Sunday. Bettmeralp is a car-free village on a sunny terrace above the Rhône valley, reached by cable car, with walks in the Aletsch forest and viewpoints on the Eggishorn and Bettmerhorn.
