The Ameland Adventure Run takes place in December on one of the Frisian Islands. Half-marathon, 10 km and 5 km routes cross the island between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea — dunes, beaches and woodland paths — starting and finishing in the village of Nes. The mood is intimate and festive: prize-giving on the church square with Christmas music, hot chocolate and an after-party at the harbour. Ameland is reached by ferry from Holwerd; the island has few cars, a lighthouse, cycle paths and seals on the sandbanks.
