Marathon Amersfoort has run since 2009 and draws thousands, from marathoners to kids in the mini runs. Start and finish are by the Eemplein; the course follows the river Eem, the historic centre and green suburbs, with DJs and live bands along the way. From 2027 the event moves to April to avoid May heat. Amersfoort is one of the prettiest old towns in the Netherlands — the medieval Koppelpoort water gate, the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren and cosy streets inside the old moat — and Amsterdam and Utrecht are close by.
