The Lake Annecy Marathon runs along the shore of Europe's cleanest lake, past the Pont des Amours and the Jardins de l'Europe with its century-old carousel — and the organizer-advertised 86 meters of elevation gain feels, by runners' own accounts, noticeably hillier in practice. The course is beautiful but not quite as flat as advertised: those chasing a personal best are sometimes surprised by the terrain in the second half. The night before, there's an official pasta party, and after the finish, food trucks and a massage zone await at Le Pâquier park.

The organizers advertise 86 meters of elevation gain, but my GPS measured closer to 135 — the course regularly turns out hillier than advertised.

The marathon is advertised as flat — spoiler alert: not really. I came with a whole busload of runners from an Alsatian club, nearly eighty people.
