Apeldoorn's Midwinter Marathon is one of the country's oldest winter races, holding its 52nd edition in early February 2027. The course leaves town for the Veluwe forests — real hills by Dutch standards — and the marathon includes a stretch over the Kootwijkerzand sand dunes. Besides the marathon there are 25 km, 10 miles, 8 km and a 4 km night run. Apeldoorn is the gateway to Hoge Veluwe National Park with the Kröller-Müller Museum, and home to Het Loo Palace and its baroque gardens.
