The Auffahrtslauf St. Gallen is held every year on Ascension Day and is the largest running event in Eastern Switzerland. Start and finish are at the football stadium, and the half-marathon course heads east to the Gübsensee, crosses the city centre past the 'Red Square' of the Stadtlounge and drops down to the Siebenbrückenweg, the seven-bridges path in the Sitter gorge, over hilly terrain with about 280 m of climbing. Besides the half marathon there are 10 and 6 km races, kids' and youth runs and even a couples category. St. Gallen is famous for its UNESCO-listed abbey and library, the oriel windows of its old town, its embroidery and the OLMA bratwurst.
