The Bank of Cyprus Nicosia Marathon is held in late January, with a marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km races, a corporate 5 km and a 1 km kids' race. The marathon starts in Solomou Square and finishes in Eleftheria Square beside the Venetian walls. The flat course runs on closed roads past the Municipal Theatre, through the Municipal Gardens, to the historic Famagusta Gate and the Liberty Monument, and along a linear park built on a former railway line. There are pacers for 3:30, 4:00 and 4:30, live tracking and a medal for every finisher. Nicosia is Europe's last divided capital: wander the old town inside the walls, visit the Cyprus Museum and settle in for a proper meze.
