The Basler Stadtlauf is a traditional evening race in late November; in 2026 it is held for the 43rd time, and registrations have already passed 10,000. The main race is 5.5 km through the Christmas-decorated centre, along the glittering Freie Strasse, across the Rhine on the Mittlere Brücke and to a shared finish on the Marktplatz by the red town hall. There is also a 1 km family run, school races and an elite youth race, with crowds lining the course and a festive mood under the motto 'Run the way you tick'. Basel is a city of museums, from the Fondation Beyeler to the Kunstmuseum, with one of Switzerland's finest Christmas markets and summer swims in the Rhine.
