First held in 1919, the Behobia-San Sebastián is one of Europe's oldest mass-participation races and by far the most popular in Spain: around 28,000 runners take part each year, and the lottery bibs sell out within hours. The 20.196 km course starts at the Behobia border crossing in Irún and finishes on the boulevard of San Sebastián, tackling two demanding climbs — Gaintxurizketa (km 7) and Miracruz (km 16) — that make the race notably tougher than a standard half marathon. Tens of thousands of spectators line the entire route, creating an atmosphere runners compare to a mountain stage of the Tour de France. A finish along the promenade overlooking La Concha Bay, followed by Basque culinary tradition, makes this an unforgettable autumn race weekend.

It's a tough course, especially for a distance close to a half marathon, with two long climbs that don't let up. But it's remarkable that even on secondary roads with nothing special around, locals still come out to cheer the runners on. The Behobia-San Sebastián is more than 30,000 souls living more than 30,000 unique, unrepeatable experiences.
