The Belfast City Marathon was first run in 1982, when about three thousand runners finished; today, with its team relay and 8-mile event, it is a huge early-May celebration. A 2019 revamp moved it to Sunday and spread the route across more of the city: start at the grand Parliament Buildings on the Stormont Estate, past City Hall and the Salmon of Knowledge and Rise sculptures, to a finish in Ormeau Park. The profile is gently rolling, but street support and relay teams give it a carnival feel. Afterwards, explore the Lagan waterfront, the Titanic Quarter, live-music pubs and the Antrim coast.
