The Berenloop is Terschelling's big running weekend at the turn of October and November. The marathon crosses almost the whole island to the Boschplaat nature reserve and back — forest trails, dunes and stretches of wide North Sea beach — so it is a race for the experience rather than the clock. There are also a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and kids' races; the main distances sell out long in advance. Terschelling is one of the Frisian Islands, reached by ferry from Harlingen — leave the car on the mainland and explore by bike.
