Bieg Lechitów has been held since 1978 and is regarded as Poland's oldest half marathon; every September thousands of runners come to Gniezno for its running festival. The course is symbolic: it starts at Ostrów Lednicki, the likely site of Poland's baptism, and finishes on Gniezno's Market Square by the cathedral. It is flat and fast, and the medals featuring Polish kings have become collectibles. Besides the half there is the 5 km 'Piątka Lechitów' and kids' races, and the event often supports charity causes. Gniezno was Poland's first capital: see the cathedral and its famous bronze doors, the Royal Route and the museum on Lednica island.
