Bieg Rzeźnika ('The Butcher's Run') is Poland's cult mountain ultra, now a whole festival in Cisna, in the heart of the Bieszczady, held in early summer. The flagship distance is about 80 km, and the programme also includes 5, 12, 16, 28, 52, 95 and 106 km plus the 175 km 'Rzeźnicki Szlem' with up to 7,800 m of climbing. Courses cross the high meadows and beech forests of the Bieszczady, with mud, roots and legendary ascents; many distances carry UTMB Index points and some start at night. The vibe is tough yet warm — a challenge Polish trail runners talk about for years. The Bieszczady are Poland's wildest corner: the Wetlińska and Caryńska meadows, Lake Solina and the narrow-gauge forest railway from Cisna.
