The Hermannslauf has been a German running legend since 1972: 31.1 km along the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest from the Hermann Monument near Detmold to Sparrenburg Castle in Bielefeld. The course follows the forest trails of the Hermannsweg with constant ups and downs, and thousands of runners and spectators make it a folk festival. Bielefeld itself is a university city with a hilltop castle and old centre; Detmold with its open-air museum is half an hour away.
