The Brocken-Challenge is a winter charity ultra: 80 km from Göttingen to the summit of the Brocken (1,141 m), the highest point in northern Germany. February, snow, the Harz forest and a finish on a snow-covered summit — with entry fees going to charity. A steam narrow-gauge railway climbs the Brocken from Wernigerode, a colourful half-timbered town with a castle.
