The modern Bucharest Marathon has been organised since 2008 by the Bucharest Running Club and bills itself as Romania's largest running event, with runners from more than 50 countries. Every October the city closes its streets for a weekend: Saturday brings the 10 km and 2.5 km, Sunday the marathon, half marathon and four-person relay. The flat, fast course with long straights starts by Izvor Park, runs along grand avenues and through the Old Town, and finishes in Constitution Square with the Palace of the Parliament — one of the largest buildings on earth — as its backdrop. The race holds a World Athletics Bronze Label, with course records of around 2:11 for men and 2:33 for women. Afterwards, stroll through Lipscani, dine at the historic Caru' cu Bere and enjoy autumn in Cișmigiu and Herăstrău parks.
