Ciucaș X3 is one of Romania's best-known mountain races: it has run 16 times, and every early September the resort of Cheia gathers thousands of runners from Romania and abroad. There is something for every level: the 3.8 km Babeș Vertical, an 8.8 km cross, a 21.6 km half marathon and the flagship 38.5 km The Ridge, plus a kids' race. The courses are tough but stunning — alpine meadows, the bizarre rock towers of the Ciucaș massif and sweeping views across the Eastern Carpathians. Each year the organisers work with local authorities to mark, maintain and clean the trails, leaving the mountains better than they found them. Cheia is a quiet mountain resort between Ploiești and Brașov, within easy reach of medieval Brașov and Peleș Castle in Sinaia.
