The Connemara International Marathon — the Connemarathon — is held in April in the heart of Connemara near Maam Cross, drawing 700+ half marathoners, over 300 marathoners and around a hundred 63 km ultra runners. The course runs through the Inagh Valley past lakes, rolling bogland and the Twelve Bens and Maumturk mountains — scenery people travel from around the world to see. Near the end waits the famous long climb known as the 'Hell of the West', which every finisher remembers with pride. Afterwards: Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park and Diamond Hill, the Killary Harbour fjord, and seafood chowder and smoked salmon in the pubs.
