The PZU Cracovia Maraton has been held since 2002 in mid-April and draws around 7,000 runners from some 70 countries — one of the region's most international marathons and part of the Crown of Polish Marathons. The loop course starts and finishes on the Main Market Square, runs about 15 km along the Vistula and passes Wawel Castle, the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and the modern ICE Kraków congress centre. There is also a 10 km night race and a 4.2 km Nordic walk, and every finisher gets a medal. Running through a UNESCO World Heritage city is a treat in itself. Afterwards: the cafés of Kazimierz, Wawel Hill, obwarzanek bagels and, if your legs allow, the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
