The Crete Half Marathon takes place in early October in Arkalochori, a small inland town south of Heraklion. Organised by the local club ΑΘΛΗ.Σ.Υ., it has something for everyone: a half marathon, 10 km, a 5 km open to walkers, a 1 km children's race and a race for athletes with disabilities. Start and finish are at the municipal theatre, and the course heads into rural Crete — olive groves, vineyards and hills, so the terrain is rolling rather than flat. The atmosphere is warmly village-like, with locals coming out to cheer and Cretan hospitality after the finish. The Heraklion region offers the Palace of Knossos, the wineries of the Peza valley, mountain villages and, of course, Cretan food with raki and dakos.
