The Crete Marathon takes place in April in Chania and celebrated its tenth, anniversary edition in 2026 under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organisation. Runners choose from the marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 2.5 km — from a serious challenge to an easy family jog. Start and finish are at the National Sports Centre of Chania, and spring Crete welcomes runners with blooming fields, soft sunshine and views of the sea and the White Mountains. It is as much a trip as a race, and many stay on for a week after the finish. Chania offers the Venetian harbour and lighthouse, a maze of old-town lanes, the covered market, the Samaria Gorge and the beaches of Balos and Elafonisi.
