The Dam tot Damloop is a Dutch running legend since 1985: ten English miles (16.1 km) from Amsterdam's Dam to Zaandam's Dam, passing through the tunnel under the IJ river. It is held on the second-to-last Sunday of September and draws tens of thousands of runners; Damloop by Night runs the evening before. The course is flat and fast — the men's record is 44:27 (Leonard Komon, 2011). Zaandam is windmill country: the open-air Zaanse Schans is next door, and central Amsterdam is 15 minutes by train.
