DNB Oslo Marathon was first run in 1981 and has been held in its current form since 2004, turning the centre of the Norwegian capital into a running festival every September. There is a marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km, plus the Oslo Mini Marathon for children. The course follows the shore of the Oslofjord past City Hall, Akershus Fortress and the white marble Opera House, and marathoners run it twice; the course record belongs to Japan's Yuki Kawauchi, 2:15:58 in 2017. Many volunteers have helped for decades, and they give the race its warm atmosphere. Oslo offers the walkable roof of the Opera House, the Munch Museum, Vigeland sculpture park, the Aker Brygge waterfront and the fjord islands.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
