The NN Egmond Halve Marathon has been a cult winter race since 1973, held in early January at the seaside resort of Egmond aan Zee. Half the course runs along the wide North Sea beach and half on paths through the dunes; headwind and soft sand make it a real test, which is exactly why runners love it. It sells out every year — recently 18,500 people lined up. The day before, the Egmond-Pier-Egmond beach bike race uses the same sands. Egmond is a quiet seaside village with a lighthouse; Alkmaar and its cheese market are 20 minutes away.
