The Enschede Marathon is the country's oldest: first run in 1947 and held every year since 1991, in April. In 2021 Eliud Kipchoge won here in 2:04:30 — still the course record — and until 2009 the route even crossed into Germany via neighbouring Gronau. It is modest in size but rich in history and professionally organised. Enschede is the student hub of the Twente region on the German border, with the Volkspark, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and green countryside for bike rides.
