The Westenergie Marathon around Lake Baldeney in Essen is one of the oldest marathons in Germany. A flat course along the shores of the Ruhr lake — the green side of the former coal region; there is a half and a 10 km too. Essen has the Zollverein coal mine (UNESCO) with the Ruhr Museum and the Krupp family's Villa Hügel on the same lake.
