Festival des Templiers has been held in Millau in mid-October since 1995, drawing around 13,000 runners from 45 countries across 18 races from 8 km to over 100 km. The headline event is the Grand Trail des Templiers, the 'founding route of 1995': about 80 km and more than 3,400 m of climbing over the limestone causses, through the Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie gorges, with steep rocky climbs and descents. Its pre-dawn start beneath the Causse Noir, lit by head torches, is one of trail running's most atmospheric sights. Millau means the viaduct over the Tarn valley and handmade gloves, with the Roquefort caves, where the famous cheese ripens, close by.
