Les Foulées du Gois take place in June at Beauvoir-sur-Mer on the famous Passage du Gois, the causeway to the island of Noirmoutier that only emerges from the sea at low tide. The main race is 8 km on the Gois itself, with separate women's, men's and handisport races and kids' events, and some 1,500 runners in the 8 km. The climax is the 'Race Against the Sea': around 35 elite runners set off as the tide is already flooding the road and finish splashing through water, while oyster farmers bring out boats to film the spectacle. The local word 'goiser' means 'to walk with wet feet'; around it lie Noirmoutier's salt marshes and mimosas, oysters, beaches and the Vendée's cycle paths.
