The Funchal Marathon takes place at the end of January, when mainland Europe is in winter and Madeira enjoys mild, spring-like weather. It is organised by the Madeira Athletics Association on a World Athletics-certified course, with a half marathon and an 8 km mini-marathon alongside the full distance. The race runs through Funchal, between the ocean and the green slopes that rise above the city like an amphitheatre. Funchal offers the cable car to Monte and the wicker toboggan ride down, botanical gardens, the Lavradores market with exotic fruit, Madeira wine in old lodges and walks along the levadas.
