The Geneva Marathon loops around Lake Geneva on a course almost deliberately engineered for a negative split: a long downhill at kilometer 32 carries runners toward a finish with the Jet d'Eau fountain on the horizon. The field is comparatively small — about three thousand marathon finishers among seventeen thousand participants across all distances — so bag drop and toilet queues run, by runners' own accounts, without the usual crush. Early May here is unpredictable: one year brings all-day rain, another brings surprise heat past 23°C that catches under-hydrated runners off guard.
