Gerês Extreme Marathon is a late-November trail festival in Campo do Gerês, organised by the events company of famed Portuguese ultrarunner Carlos Sá with the support of Terras de Bouro municipality. There is something for everyone: the Extreme Mile, 12 and 14 km races, a half marathon, a marathon (also as a three-person relay) and a 90 km ultra. The courses cross the granite mountains of Gerês through autumn oak woods, past the Geira Roman-road museum and the hydro plant at the Vilarinho das Furnas reservoir. Peneda-Gerês National Park is known for waterfalls, stone mountain villages, wild garrano horses and the thermal spa of Vila do Gerês.
