The Gigasport Halbmarathon Graz opens the Styrian running season in early April. Runners can choose the half marathon, a 10.55 km quarter marathon or 5.5 km, and kids race 400 m or 800 m. Start and finish are on Karmeliterplatz in the old town, and the course loops through parks and streets around the centre, including Maria-Theresia-Allee and Glacisstraße, with aid stations along the way. Every finisher gets a medal. Graz is Austria's second city, with a red-roofed UNESCO-listed old town, the climb up the Schlossberg to the clock tower, the 'friendly alien' Kunsthaus, the Murinsel and Styrian food dressed with pumpkin-seed oil.
