The Gondo Marathon was founded in 2002 in memory of the mudslide of 14 October 2000 that destroyed part of the village of Gondo and killed 13 people. It is Switzerland's only two-day double marathon: on day one the course runs from Gondo through the Gondo gorge and over the Simplon and Bistinen passes (2,417 m) to Brig, and on day two it returns via the historic Stockalper trail and the Ganter valley, for 84 km and about 4,000 m of climbing in all. You can also run a single marathon on Saturday or a 32 km fun run, and children have races of up to 1,600 m. The atmosphere is warm and family-like, the scenery wild valleys, light mountain forests and flowering meadows, and Brig with its Stockalper Palace and the Simplon Pass are worth a trip of their own.
