The Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon takes place in early July and is considered one of the world's most beautiful mountain marathons. It starts in St. Niklaus and climbs the Mattertal valley to Zermatt, then up steep ascents to Sunnegga and Riffelalp to finish at Riffelberg, 42.195 km with about 1,470 m of climbing. Ultra runners add another 3.4 km and 514 m of ascent to the Gornergrat at 3,089 m, with a panorama of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and glaciers. There are relays and the Hörnli Kidrun, and spectators can follow the race on a special 'Mobile Grandstand' train. Zermatt is a car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn, with the Gornergrat cog railway, the Five Lakes trail and cosy chalets.
