The Górski Zimowy Maraton Ślężański is a winter mountain marathon in Sobótka, held in January by the Sobótka Runners' Club; it has passed ten editions, with a record of over 700 participants. Runners choose a 42.6 km marathon with about 1,130 m of climbing or a 23.9 km half with about 575 m, in 'Anglo-Saxon' mountain style — up and down the forest trails of the Ślęża massif. In winter the course can be snowy and icy, testing both character and shoes. It is a great way to open the season early and get mountain training in mid-winter. Ślęża was a sacred mountain of the ancient Slavs, with stone sculptures and an observation tower on top, and Wrocław with its gnomes and Market Square is close by.
