Grand Raid de La Réunion has been held every October since 1989, and its flagship, the Diagonale des Fous — the 'Madmen's Diagonal' — crosses the island from south to north, from Saint-Pierre to Saint-Denis. It is around 175 km with roughly 10,000 m of climbing: the slopes of Piton de la Fournaise volcano, the cirques of Cilaos and roadless Mafate, rainforest and endless stone steps. The shorter Trail de Bourbon and Mascareignes run alongside, and the whole island turns out to cheer runners along the trails and at the finish stadium. Réunion is a French island in the Indian Ocean with an active volcano, waterfalls, lagoons and Creole cooking of curries and rum.
