Run every September since 1981, the Great North Run is the world's biggest half marathon: 63,000 people started the 45th edition in 2026, and total finishers will pass 1.5 million. The city-to-sea route starts in Newcastle, crosses the iconic Tyne Bridge and runs through Gateshead to a coastal finish at South Shields. More than 200,000 spectators line the course, and the traditional Red Arrows flypast is a goosebump moment. Newcastle offers the Quayside and Millennium Bridge, BALTIC gallery, Hadrian's Wall and the castles of the Northumberland coast.
