Holmenkollstafetten is the world's largest relay and one of Norway's biggest sporting events, held in early May since 1923. Around 5,000 teams and more than 70,000 participants split the course into 15 legs of different lengths, from short sprints to stretches of nearly three kilometres, so there is a place for fast runners and casual joggers alike. Start and finish are at Bislett Stadium, and the route climbs through Oslo's streets towards the wooded slopes of Holmenkollen before returning to the centre, with steep climbs, sharp descents and crowds on every corner. Schools, clubs and whole companies field teams, and for many Norwegians it is an annual spring ritual. Oslo offers the Holmenkollen ski jump and ski museum, the Opera House, the Munch Museum and Vigeland Park.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
