The If Vilnius Half Marathon takes place in late May and bills itself as the biggest spring race in the Lithuanian capital: a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and a 200 m kids' race for little ones from age two. Start and finish are by Cathedral Square, and the course runs through the streets of the centre with views of the bell tower, Gediminas Tower and the banks of the Neris. It's aimed at everyone from beginners to seasoned runners, and families often turn out together, so the city centre takes on a real festival mood. Vilnius has one of Europe's largest baroque old towns, with churches, courtyards, the self-declared Republic of Užupis and great cafés where you can refuel with cepelinai and cold beetroot soup.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
