Istria 100 by UTMB is Croatia's biggest trail race: it began in 2013 as a small event and now, as part of the UTMB World Series, draws more than 3,000 runners in early April. Distances are 168 km (from Labin), 110 km (from Buzet), 69 km (from Lake Butoniga), 42 km (from the foot of Motovun) and 21 km (from Grožnjan), and all finish on the Umag seafront. The courses cross the peninsula from the Učka mountains through rolling vineyards and forests to the sea, passing medieval hilltop towns. It is a classic spring season-opener with the buzz of an international festival. Istria is the land of truffles, olive oil and Malvazija wine, and Motovun, Grožnjan and Rovinj are well worth a visit without a race bib.
