Itämeri-maraton (Baltic Sea Marathon) is held in Hanko on the first Saturday of October. Choose the marathon (two laps), half (one lap) or quarter marathon; routes are marked with painted lines and kilometre signs. Start and finish are at the Central School, with changing rooms, showers and a café, and aid stations even serve gherkins and raisins. It's a small, neighbourly race run by the local fire brigade association and athletics club. Hanko is Finland's southernmost resort: late-19th-century wooden villas, sandy beaches, lighthouses and a water tower lookout.
