Jelgava's night half marathon has been held since 2014 (with a pandemic pause) and every August turns the town into one big party: more than 4,000 people took part in 2025. The races start late in the evening — the half marathon goes off at 21:15, while the 5 and 10 km head into the dark closer to 23:00. The race centre sits on Pasta Island in the middle of the Lielupe river, and the course is flat and fast, lit up and lined with spectators. The half doubles as the Latvian championship, so the country's best athletes run alongside amateurs; there is also a mile and children's races. Jelgava was once the capital of the Duchy of Courland: its baroque palace by Rastrelli is a must-see, and Riga is only 40 km away.
