Jönköping Marathon has grown over more than ten editions into a big late-August running weekend at the southern tip of Lake Vättern, Sweden's second-largest lake. The marathon and half marathon run through Jönköping and neighbouring Huskvarna, with the finish placed right in the middle of the Munksjö bridge between Lake Munksjön and Vättern, a striking spot for the final metres. It is a World Athletics Rankings competition with runners from more than 60 nations, plus relays, the children's MINI Marathon and an expo. Aid stations serve water, sports drink and, very Swedishly, pickled cucumber. Jönköping is the home of the safety match, with its own museum and a lakeside promenade, and nearby are Visingsö island and the wooden town of Gränna, famous for its striped peppermint rock.
