Kalmar Malkars 21 km is a late-June half marathon starting from the Malkars training centre in Kalmar, with the 5 km Malkars Femman for those who prefer something shorter. The course is flat asphalt on an out-and-back route through residential areas, fishing harbours and parks, with views of medieval Kalmar Castle and the six-kilometre bridge to the island of Öland. It is an intimate race of a few hundred runners, with a medal and T-shirt for every finisher, and a good chance of a fast time at the start of the Swedish summer. Kalmar is one of Sweden's loveliest old towns, with a Renaissance castle on the water, a cathedral and the cobbled Kvarnholmen island, while across the bridge lie Öland's beaches and windmills.
