The Karwendelmarsch is a mountain march and run across the Karwendel Nature Park, held on the last Saturday of August; it draws about 2,500 people, and the 18th edition takes place on 28 August 2027. The 52 km route runs from Scharnitz through the Eng valley with its famous maple meadows to Pertisau on the Achensee, while a 35 km version joins the course further along. Nobody is forced to race: some run for time, others walk all day, taking in limestone walls, mountain streams and alpine huts. The motto is 'die Legende lebt' — the legend lives — and participants praise its varied scenery and flawless organisation. After the finish there is the turquoise Achensee for a swim, a boat trip or a ride on the Achenseebahn cog railway.
