The Kaunas Marathon has been held since 2013 and has become the main spring race in Lithuania's second city, with the Akropolis shopping centres as title sponsor. It takes place in late April as the city wakes up from winter, with the marathon and half marathon as the main distances. The city course is fast: the men's record is 2:17:17 (Remigijus Kančys, 2022) and the women's 2:47:52, and winners have come from Lithuania, Ukraine, Kenya and New Zealand. Kaunas was Lithuania's interwar capital and European Capital of Culture 2022: UNESCO-listed modernist architecture, pedestrian Laisvės Alėja, a castle at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris, and funiculars up to Žaliakalnis hill.
