The Kitzbüheler Horn Mountain Street Run, formerly the Bergstraßenlauf, was first held on 26 August 1979 and ranks with the Hahnenkamm downhill and the tennis tournament among Kitzbühel's three longest-running sports events. It takes place in late August: 12.9 km with 1,234 m of climbing and gradients of up to 25%. The first 3.5 km warm up from the town centre, then come the countless hairpins of the panoramic toll road, past the Alpenhaus lodge, to the summit of the Kitzbüheler Horn at 1,996 m. The field mixes amateurs with international mountain-running elites. Kitzbühel is a glamorous ski resort with a medieval centre, the famous Streif and the Schwarzsee lake, and the Horn summit looks out over the Hohe Tauern and the Wilder Kaiser.
